The Chinatown Manifesto:
A Century of Resilience

For over one hundred years, the streets of Edmonton’s Chinatown have served as a sanctuary of culture and a staging ground for immigrant dreams. This district is not merely a collection of businesses; it is a living, breathing testament to the resilience of the Indochinese diaspora.

Our history is etched into the Edwardian brickwork of the Hull Block and reflected in the traditional pavilions of the Chinese Garden. But Chinatown is also a community in transition. We acknowledge the challenges—the economic shifts, the social complexities, and the need for renewed investment.

The Chinatown Transformation Collaborative Society of Edmonton (CTC) was born from a radical vision: to ensure that Chinatown remains a prosperous and sustainable hub of cultural, commercial, and social activity for the next century. We are the architects of the Edmonton Chinatown Strategy, a multi-million dollar roadmap designed to energize our future while honouring our roots. Whether you are here for a bowl of slow-simmered Pho, a deep dive into urban strategy, or to volunteer for our next community cleanup, you are part of the transformation. Welcome home.

Meet Pandy:
Your Edmonton Chinatown Ambassador

Hello! I'm Pandy, and I'm so excited to be your guide through the most vibrant neighbourhood in Edmonton!

I’m not your average panda. I might be small, but I have a huge heart for my community. You can always spot me in my favourite outfit: my traditional red silk robe embroidered with golden clouds—a symbol of luck and high aspirations—and my matching red cap. I was raised on the legendary scents of 97th Street, and I’ve spent my life learning the secrets of our district.

I am a gourmand (I can tell you exactly which bakery has the flakiest tart on any given morning!), a historian who loves the stories of the Hull Block, and a safety warden who wants every family to feel welcome here. I remember the original Harbin Gate, and I am the biggest cheerleader for our new construction projects.

My mission is to make sure you experience the absolute best of Chinatown. Whether I’m pointing out the beautiful calligraphy on a storefront that’s been here since 1960 or showing you where to find the best secret spicy Thai skewers, I am here for you. Look for my 'Signature Selection' stamps throughout this website—those are my personal 'must-see' recommendations. Let’s Chase the Dragon together!"

The Legend of Pandy:
In the early days of Edmonton’s Chinatown, legend tells of a curious cub who followed the aroma of "Wok Hei" (the breath of the wok) all the way from the banks of the North Saskatchewan River to the kitchens of North Chinatown. The elders recognized the cub’s spirit of curiosity and joy and gifted him the red silk worn by the community leaders. Today, I reside at the CTC Storytelling Centre at the Hull Block, guarding the memories of our past and the blueprints for our future.

The Edmonton Chinatown Strategy At-A-Glance

The Chinatown Transformation Collaborative Society of Edmonton (CTC) leads the implementation of the most ambitious revitalization strategy in Edmonton’s history: "Energizing a Prosperous Future." We believe that a successful community is built on five immovable pillars. Below is our commitment to you and our progress to date.

A Tale of Two Districts

North Chinatown: The Commercial Core

Centred around the 97th Street corridor and the historic Hull Block, North Chinatown is the energetic heartbeat of the district. This is where you’ll find the "Dragon Food Tour" hidden gems, the CTC Storytelling Centre, and the legendary supermarkets that have anchored the community for decades.

South Chinatown: The Cultural Sanctuary

The gateway to the River Valley. South Chinatown is defined by the serenity of the Edmonton Chinese Garden and the symbolic weight of the Nine Dragon Wall. It is a place for reflection, traditional festivals, and the upcoming New Harbin Gate at 97 Street North West and Jasper Ave.
